Construction of the Former Hokkaido Government Office Building, affectionately known as “Red Brick(Aka renga),” began in 1886, the same year the Hokkaido Government Office was established, and was completed two years later in 1888.
In 1909, the exterior bricks withstood a fire that completely destroyed the interior, preserving the building’s original appearance to this day.
In 1968, a large-scale restoration was carried out, and the Red Brick Government Building was reborn as a “Hokkaido Memory Store” in both name and reality. (It was subsequently renovated in 2025.)
This book’s 18 chapters explore the highlights of the Red Brick Building before its 2025 renovation and explore a history unique to Hokkaido that is unmatched in any other prefecture.
The number “18” represents the number of important items that support the beauty of the Red Brick Government Building. Why not read this book to discover the secrets of the number 18 and the differences between the Red Brick Building and its current state?
